LIBRARY LADY

Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up in an Air Force family, so I’ve lived all over the place. I was born in Alaska and lived in Mississippi, Oregon, Japan, Hawaii, Tennessee, and Florida. After I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, I moved back to Florida where I met my husband Wally. We have two daughters, Alison and Lauren, two sons-in-law, Jason and Ryan, and two granddaughters, Emma and Sophia.

Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write the types of books I enjoy reading – light, breezy romances, quirky mysteries, and women’s fiction about Christian characters with tons of personality. I like to feel all the emotions – joy, humor, sadness, and angst – of the characters who are as imperfect as I am.

Besides writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies?

I love anything to do with food, fitness, and fashion. I try to eat a healthy, gluten-free diet and work out almost every day. I read fashion magazines and find ways to make the styles I like appropriate for my age and body type.
Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always been a reader, and I’ve always enjoyed writing nonfiction. But the desire to become a fiction writer didn’t happen until my husband challenged me to write what I read after he nearly tripped over all the library books I’d checked out. I took the challenge, and five years later, I sold my first book.

What advice would you give to a beginning writer?

Read the types of books you want to write and analyze what makes them successful. If you can afford to attend at least one writer’s conference every year, go and soak everything up. Make friends with other writers who will understand what you are going through and listen to what the editors are looking for.

What book are you currently working on?

I’m working on Missing Dixie, the first book of three books in the Uptown Belles series for Charisma House. These are contemporary, fish-out-of-water romances, all with heroines who move from the South to New York City.

Please tell us a little about “Pretty Is As Pretty Does.”

Priscilla Slater goes to her ten-year high school reunion with equal parts dread and eager anticipation. Even though she’s a successful owner of a chain of hair salons and no longer has the mousy brown hair, crooked teeth, and discount-store wardrobe, she still feels like the ugly duckling. But when she arrives at the reunion, Priscilla soon realizes that her old classmates aren’t exactly as she remembers them. With humor and a just a touch of sassiness, Priscilla finds herself facing her own truth—and she may be surprised at what she discovers.
